BMW X5, a powerhouse on wheels, this year has a much improvised powerful engine to its credit. Everything about this crossover SUV exudes style and elegance. There are five trim levels available for the users to choose from. They are xDrive35i, xDrive35i Premium, xDrive35i Sport Activity, xDrive 35d and xDrive50i.
Design, styling and features
The base trim xDrive35i has 18 inch wheels, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, foglights and automatic wipers to make the exterior look beautiful. In the cabin there is a dual zone automatic climate control air conditioner, cruise control, leather based upholstery that looks extremely attractive, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, 10 way power front seats and a 12 speaker music system for entertainment.
The xDrive35i Premium has big 19 inch wheels, privacy glass and roof rails. In the cabin are present a power steering wheel, ipod and USB interface and pure leather upholstery.The xDrive35i Sport Activity has an even larger 20 inch wheels, sport look seats and steering wheel, upgraded suspension, dark exterior trim and 16 speaker music system for entertainment.
The other features that are present in almost all trim levels are satellite radio, front heated and ventilated seats, navigation system, power tailgate, parking sensors, automatic high beams, keyless entry, multiview parking camera, sideview mirrors, heated rear seats and steering wheel and a rear seat entertainment system.
Engine performance and mileage
All the trim levels of BMW X5 have an all drive system. There are three engine options available for the buyers. The base model which is xDrive35i has a 3.0 litre inline 6 turbocharged engine that produces 300 pound feet of torque and 300 horsepower.
This engine comes equipped with 8 speed automatic transmission and goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds! The EPA mileage is 12 mpg in city and 25 mpg on highways.
The xDrive35d comes with a 3.0 litre inline 6 turbodiesel engine that develops 425 lb ft of torque and 265 horsepower. This engine comes with six speed automatic transmission and can zoom from 0 to 60 mpg in 7.2 seconds.
It gives an EPA mileage of 19 in city and 26 on highways which are quite satisfactory.The xDrive50i has a twin turbo 4.4 litre V8 engine. It develops a great 450 lb ft of torque and 400 horse power! What will really surprise you is the acceleration that goes from 0 to 60 mph in merely 5.3 seconds! The EPA fuel economy is 14 in city and 20 on highways.
Safety features
They include antilock brakes, brake drying, rollover sensor, stability control, side curtain and front side airbags for the second and first row respectively. X5 gets five stars for frontal driver seat impact and four for frontal passenger seat impact. Overall it gets top ratings from IIHS.
